Nurse.com Launches Online Learning Tool
New Jersey nurses now have another resource available to help them meet state requirements for organ donation certification thanks to a new web-based seminar developed by Nurse.com. Upon completion of the training module, nurses will better understand the authorization process and reasons some people choose not to donate as well as the collaborative relationship between the organ procurement organization and hospital staff in presenting and collaborating on the entire donation process.

New Jersey’s state public policy toward organ and tissue donation has moved from a position of general support to a position of advocacy that encourages positive donation decisions as imperative to saving more lives.
The Hero Act was signed into law by Acting Governor Richard J. Cody on July 22, 2008. It includes measures designed to create a more dynamic, comprehensive framework regarding organ and tissue donation, one of which is mandated educational components. The New Jersey Hero Act encourages organ and tissue donation and recovery education for practicing physicians and requires training for nurses throughout the State. More specifically it requires instructional training on donation and best clinical practices as a condition of graduation from medical/nursing schools in New Jersey. Additionally, organ and tissue donation instructional training was required to be available to current practitioners through on- line continuing Education training by July, 2011.
NJ Sharing Network and Gift of Life Donor Services (GOL), the two Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) federally designated to coordinate the recovery of organs and tissues in New Jersey, worked together with Gannet Nursing to develop a one CE program that fully comply with the requirements.
This program is entitled “NJ Required Organ and Tissue Donation Choice. What every nurse needs to know.” To learn more visit www.nurse.com. It is Course ID #CE665 and can be found under NJ State Required CE at the cost of $10.00
